How to merge layers in Photoshop

Layers are one of the most used and useful functions of Photoshop. But merging theme, or some of them is equally useful. There are 4 methods of merging Layers. All of these option will include accessing the Layer panel.

 

Method 1 – Flatten Image

The most straight forward method to merge Layers is to simply flatten the image.

• Go to the drop down menu in the Layer Panel

• Choose “Flatten Image”

• This will merge all layers including the background and make one single layer of your image

Method 2 – Merge Layers

This is one of the 2 most precise methods in order to merge Layers and allows you to pick specific Layers to be merged.

• In the Layer Panel, click on the layers you wish to merge.

• Go to the drop down menu in the Layer Menu

• Go to “Merge Layers”

• This will merge the selected layers only

Method 3 – Merge Visible

The Merge Visible is the other precise merging method.

• The layers you want merged must be ‘visible’, meaning that the Eye icon on each layer must be ‘on’ 

• Go to the drop down menu in the Layer Menu

• Go to “Merge Visible”

• This will merge the layers that had their Eye icons ‘on’, including the background layer.

Method 4 – Merge Down

This merging method allows to merge layers down from a selected ‘start’ layer BUT excluding the background layer.

• Click on the layer you want to begin the merging to start from.

• Click the drop down menu in the Layer Menu

• Go to “Merge Visible”

• This will merge all layers down from the starting layer excluding the background layer
